Hello dear forum,
8 years ago we built a new house and at that time, during the furnishing of the upper floor, we laid carpet. Now we want to replace it and install glued parquet instead.

We have 14cm high Hamburg baseboards all around upstairs. They are painted and made of solid wood, thus somewhat higher quality, so we would like to "save" them. We glued the baseboards back then. Now I fear that I cannot remove them completely without damage.

Question: Does anyone know how new parquet can be laid with already installed baseboards? Do the baseboards have to be completely removed? Or: should I leave them and lay the parquet basically against them?

I would be happy about tips!

Thanks and best regards

Hello questioner.
The baseboards must be removed, not least because the 8-10mm wide gap between the later (glued) parquet wood and the baseboard would be located in front of the base foot. A visually unacceptable solution!
The solid wood baseboards can (or must) be reworked after dismantling, because they will not easily come off the wall surface – ideally only taking the upper edge zone of the plaster with them. It can be assumed that the back of the baseboards will have mineral residues. These will be removed and the exposed backside of the wooden boards sanded so that there is good adhesion for the new gluing later.
The "damaged" wall surface will be closed again with a smoothing compound after spot priming.

Thank you for the response!

Since I'm at it. Is there a trick to removing the baseboards from the wall with as little damage as possible? I have to say: both the wall and the baseboards are so straight that in many places not even a sheet of paper fits in between to carefully drive a spatula or something similar into the gap to detach them from the wall...

You can also install a quarter round or a small cove molding over the border strip of the parquet and paint it in the color of the molding.

That would have been my tip as well.

Actually, this is also vaguely on my mind in case the moldings cannot be dismantled without damage. Because then I would have to buy completely new moldings upstairs again. Let’s say one would have to bite the bullet: what I really want to avoid is cutting the miters :p:p Seriously, the moldings were installed so neatly, every miter was cut perfectly by our builder back then, almost seamless. For that reason alone, I would want to keep the moldings in place. I will carefully start somewhere in the dressing area at the back and see how it goes...
