Why?
A ceiling extractor is located directly on the ceiling. It is controlled with a remote control.

Disadvantages of a table extractor (downdraft):
In an island solution, the view (usually away from the kitchen, i.e. into the open space) is (partially) blocked during use.
With island and recirculation, the air must necessarily exit again on at least one side with a high volume flow, or on two sides at the lower area.

Disadvantage of ceiling extractor:
Due to the large distance from the cooktop, high extractor performance is required to achieve effectiveness.

I consider those too weak because they are too far away. And the ones that come down are too expensive again. What blocks the view at a hole in the island? Especially compared to a normal hood that is definitely right in front of your head... That is, among other things, a reason why it probably becomes too expensive in the current case.

Well, with performance up to 850 m³/h, they are almost certainly not underpowered.

Then you mean the Bora cooktop extractors. As far as I know, these are patented by Bora and not exactly cheap. The competition offers the retractable ones.

That's true. I don't believe in miracles either.

There are also other manufacturers who do something without retractable parts. Neff, for example, recently. And I consider even the (very expensive) retractable solutions less obstructive to view than a normal hood. But I don’t want to hijack the thread now. What all these solutions have in common is the price well over 1000,-.

When I look at my current extractor hood and especially listen to it, everything can only be an improvement

We are all not giants, so I worry less about head clearance and if something is hanging from the ceiling, the view is always somewhat obstructed. But that's okay. Maybe a nice kitschy ceiling crown will be added, that is still partly open.

Downdraft is a nice thing but then my cooktop no longer fits financially and I air out while chopping salad

And ceiling fans are unfortunately out - we have a room height just over 3 meters

There is a Berbel Skyline for that. But it probably exceeds the budget...
