What kind of plaster? Gypsum? Cement? Lime? ... Gypsum plaster is indeed super soft and every bump causes dents. Lime cement is really hard and generally causes no problems. Wax crayons leave color on any wall but no dents. "Just" plastering is the easiest way to fix small dents. Filling, sanding, sanding, sanding, and repainting. No, at most you see it by a slightly different color. Which wallpapers? Painter's fleece = no. Thick non-woven wallpaper = yes. There are many types of wallpapers in between. Better talk about treating the house with care. Even with three kids and a dog, our gypsum walls did not get damaged. Currently I have partly gypsum and partly lime cement. And still no serious dents. A house is an object for use. It will always get some dents. Do what you find visually appealing (I think wallpapers are awful and had the last ones on the walls over 30 years ago). Painter's fleece is always a good choice. It results in a nice smooth wall like plaster, offers slight protection, and can be removed easily later. Alternatively, you can also apply, for example, a textured roll plaster. Nice appearance and small dents are easy to repair.

It is not settled yet, but if anything, it will probably be lime-cement plaster.
I have had wallpaper all my life and would like a smooth wall without wallpaper, preferably without fleece wallpaper as well. It doesn't have to be 100% perfect on the wall; I can tolerate normal signs of wear.
A statement like: "Yes, it’s sensitive, but I would still choose it again every time" already helps me tremendously.

If it's going to be such a hard plaster, then I would actually not consider wallpaper etc. at all. But please note. Q3 lime cement plaster is not achieved as easily as with gypsum plaster. There is no such thing as "smoothed" with it. You only achieve Q3 through a second work step, e.g. filling with lime finish. When awarding the contract, just make sure that everything is described correctly. Gypsum plaster is much finer than the coarse lime cement plaster.

You can't see anything at all if you peel it off sharply. Just go over it once with the original color. It only becomes blotchy if you use a different color.

And now I come and confuse you again. I recommend heavy painter's fleece (minimum 130g/m²) and painting over it. On the one hand, it is more robust than gypsum plaster, on the other hand much smoother than lime-cement plaster. It can also be easily painted by yourself. You scrape your elbows on lime-cement plaster, I wouldn't feel like doing that.

I support that. That’s how we have it now in the house. In the previous apartment, we had smooth gypsum plaster. We even glued the fleece ourselves at the time. The walls still have to be plastered fairly smoothly beforehand – then you get a great result that is definitely more resistant than gypsum plaster alone.

Stains from dogs: It will take about 18 months in our case to see whether that’s a problem. Stains from children can be washed out and shouldn’t have to be constantly touched up.

Stains in our unfortunately rather narrow stairwells are mostly caused by ourselves when carrying boxes. Instead of dabbing, I use a brush and a little(!) paint, painting irregularly away from the stain, as if spreading too little butter on bread. That was a tip from the painter, very good, no patchy effect, looks like new.

There are paints that have a long maintenance period because their change is very slow and they are protected from greying out. After years, the same color will still have a slightly different shade.

In my opinion, after 15-20 years, it should be repainted once during a renovation. Inevitable little things will fade away until then; living is always a form of wearing down.
