Good morning,

I want to buy both a sink and a countertop at Ikea and possibly use IKEA's handyman services, but I don’t quite understand what I’m paying for and hope for your explanation.

Countertop
For the countertop, I chose HAMMARP birch. I need 2x about 1.50 m length (2x).
“Take away” the panels cost 158 € (2x 79 €). If I have the countertop cut to the desired length, I pay 260 € (2x 130 €), but then I also have a 4 cm high countertop as well as a front edge.

Now I gather from the IKEA brochure that I can also have cutouts made for the sink & co. What does “pre-milled” mean in this context? Do I have to stand there myself with a saw etc. again after delivery of the countertop, or what? Is this service even worthwhile then?

Sink
For the sink, I chose Boholmen round. It costs 49 €. I thought I could just insert it into my “pre-milled” countertop and then only seal it with silicone or similar and of course connect the siphon & co. Is that correct?
At IKEA, you can also pay for the “installation of the sink in the countertop.” This costs 199 € for the round Boholmen. WHAT exactly am I paying for there? Is it worth it? What is the difference to the “pre-milled” cutout mentioned above?

Delivery costs
I will have the kitchen furniture delivered by IKEA. Will IKEA wait with the entire delivery until the countertop has also been produced (which may take a little longer in part?) OR do they deliver in two parts? Do I then have to pay extra for the delivery of the countertop?

These were the most important questions for now, I hope someone can help me a bit through the price jungle...
Regards, Desiree

Hello,

the Personlig solid wood worktop costs €130 per meter. HAMMARP will cut it for you with a joiner for little money. Many hardware stores do that as well.

Routing means that only the part of the wood in the shape of the cutout is routed out so that the worktop does not break during transport. This makes it easier to make the cutout with a jigsaw. Whether it is worth it is something you have to decide for yourself.

Yes, the sink is only placed in the cutout. The edge of the sink then rests on the worktop. For €199 you get the worktop with a flush-mounted sink. You can see that in the pictures on page 28 of the purchasing guide.

As far as I know, delivery only takes place when everything is complete. Exceptions can probably be arranged, but I don’t know how that affects the delivery costs. It’s best to discuss that at your next furniture store.

Hello,

thank you first of all for the reply.

I hadn’t seen the part about the meter. That means I would even have to pay 4x €130 (they surely don’t add up the half meters, do they, although they could cut the same piece of wood... it’s supposedly 4m long?), which makes €520. That’s really steep, just for cutting. Do hardware stores also cut foreign worktops (in case I don’t buy one directly there)? Does anyone have an approximate price idea for me?

So they basically took over the following work for me: marking the "template" of the sink and, I’d say, "scoring" it. I then have to cut it out properly at home; but I probably won’t cut myself badly because they would have scored it, right?

These are/would really be "additional costs" that I hadn’t expected... phew

The HAMMARP board is mass-produced somewhere. They are custom-made. Billing is done by the centimeter.

Yes, although you don’t really cut yourself if you clamp a guide rail (e.g. a spirit level) with screw clamps. You should buy a special saw blade for worktops for the jigsaw. The difference compared to another saw blade is noticeable.

You can still find plenty of carpentry shops. For a straight cut they will probably only ask for a donation for the coffee fund. Whether the hardware store will cut foreign material cannot be generally said. Some don’t do it at all, others do it for free or for 1-2 €.

Mhm... so the motto is probably a) either cut yourself (if you are skilled enough and have the necessary tools) or b) have it cut "cheaper" at the carpenter/hardware store. In both cases, I need a straight cut. However, for one of the countertops, the sink would still need to be cut out (by myself).

The cutout for the sink can also be made by the carpenter or at the hardware store. At 150 cm, the countertop should be transportable with the cutout without breaking, especially with a round cutout (for which the above-mentioned guide rail is of course nonsense).
