Hello,

we would like to get 6 surveillance cameras for outdoor use. They should be connected to a hard drive so that recording can take place when motion is detected. They should also be able to record well in the dark and have a viewing distance of 20 m. We want to connect them directly to cables and not run them via WLAN.

Which outdoor cameras would you recommend?

Best regards

Unfortunately, I have no experience with that, but you know the issues surrounding the topic of video cameras?

Visibility at 20 meters... What do you want to recognize at that distance? Even with infrared, you will only be able to see shadows or outlines in the dark. Is your property that large, or do you want to monitor the street as well?

Since quite a few things in our garden suddenly started moving, we also got some cameras which are connected to the recording device via cable. These are quite good, but I have no basis for comparison with other cameras. As already pointed out, at the distance you asked for, you can see that someone is there, but you won’t really be able to recognize anything clearly at that distance. At least, that’s how it is with ours. I also want to point out one thing. There are IR LEDs which are not visible in the dark and others which unfortunately are visible. The ones built into our cameras unfortunately belong to the latter, which means you can see a beautiful red halo in the dark, which I don’t like so much.

I have attached a picture from one of our cameras. I inserted a red dot into the image. It is meant to mark a branch that is about 12 m away from the camera.

I sent you a link to a page which I think is not bad.

Hello Kerstin

I have already dealt with the cameras. I was only able to solve it with the help of a knowledgeable friend.
A FritzBox was a basic requirement for me. It supports the cameras perfectly. I also changed the phones right away and am thrilled with the configuration.
The cameras are connected via Cat cables. With an additional device, they are also powered through this cable. So everything goes through the cables to the FritzBox, and from there everything is stored on a 3 terabyte drive every 6 weeks. I can view the current image or the storage either on the PC, a tablet, or on the phone. And that from anywhere in the world.
Now comes the expensive part: the cameras. You shouldn’t skimp on those.
There are two basic types: one with one lens, and then with two lenses. With one lens, the night vision is not optimal. One for light, one for dark is perfect. But then you’re at about 1,000 euros per camera. I bought the single-lens solution for about 600 euros. But for me, it is never completely dark anyway.
And soon I will get an IR spotlight that switches on when there is movement. Then it will be even better.
If you are interested in the brand of the cameras, I’ll gladly send you the details.

Hello Kerstin

The legal aspect must not be overlooked either. Although the state authority installs cameras in public spaces on an inflationary scale, this endeavor is subject to high hurdles for private individuals. The saying "No plaintiff, no judge" always applies here. In the best case, you can record whatever you want and nobody cares. In the worst case, you may have to remove a camera even though you are demonstrably only filming your own property, because a neighbor feels so disturbed by the presence of the camera and the theoretical possibility of intrusion into their privacy that they force its removal through an injunction. Normally, pixelating the public area is sufficient. Last autumn I filmed two people with balaclavas behind my house at 3:30 a.m. However, despite the LKA, the police could not make use of the images. At least they told me that the data was sent to the LKA.
