Hi,
setting aside all legal matters: what use are IR recordings where I can only vaguely make out masked people calmly breaking into my house?
You’ll end up like Steven: the police say thank you and the recordings get thrown away because no one really knows what to do with them anyway.
Normal cameras combined with plenty of LED floodlights are probably a bit more effective at deterring. The gentlemen of the uninvited clearing service usually don’t like generous workplace lighting. If they even come at night at all, according to statistics they usually come during the day.

Best regards,

Andreas

During the day, there is usually no one at new buildings either, as people have to earn money for the place. At night, most people are at home, which can sometimes cause trouble (for example, the hunter who shot the burglar dead – and was acquitted). The legal aspect, as mentioned, is actually pretty irrelevant, as long as you don’t go overboard and stay on your property or at least only film the public street. Neighboring properties are off-limits and could cause real trouble, depending on the situation... It would be great if you could mention the names/companies of the devices used. I have focused a bit on Netgear Arlo. Transmission via Wi-Fi and directly to an online storage (thus theft-proof). Unfortunately, these are battery-powered; I would prefer one with mains power. But I don’t have a CAT cable lying outside. I would need 2 cameras to cover the crucial spots (carport driveway and back terrace area).

I can only report from our camera (upCam) that if you want a reasonably good image quality, a lot of traffic is generated very quickly and our WLAN bandwidth was severely affected. That’s why we subsequently ran cables.

One must also not forget that depending on how large the monitored area is (e.g., an area with trees, garden gate, etc.), there are many events that the camera interprets as "motion" and starts recording images. For example, the swaying of trees/branches in the wind, the movement of shadows caused by the sun, possibly passing cars, and much more.

For us, that amounts to about 6,000 images per day (!!!) of 150 KB each, so almost 1 GB per day. The recordings go to a server, and the capacity is sufficient. Certainly, one could reduce the sensitivity of the camera. But then you still see a lot of trees and shadows, but not the essential events when someone enters the property.

IMPORTANT: This camera monitors a larger area. If you use a camera at close range, e.g., just directly at the entrance door, then naturally there are far fewer events that trigger a recording.

But depending on the purpose of use, one should consider that regular recording in reasonably good quality means a lot of traffic on the data line. And WLAN performance is poor in this regard (Fritzbox 7490 with repeaters). Our next cam will be a Mobotix then :- )

Hello Payday

the mentioned case is somewhat thinly presented. Can you provide some details? I assume that the hunter shot the burglar in self-defense (§32 StGB). Of course, in Germany one will be acquitted if one shoots a criminal in self-defense.

Steven
