L on the interior walls, door to the terrace, to the left of the terrace door then a long island (depth needs to be checked whether 80, 90 or 100). Island as long as to still have enough walking space in front of the room door (1.50?, sorry, I don’t have the measurements in mind). Distance between island and row about 1.20 or 1.30... Terrace door 1 meter. That’s how I would do it for myself, can imagine it very well and impressively. Sorry for being brief. I’m on an overseas vacation, and the pictures unfortunately do not load [emoji20]

I once tried to visualize both variants (kitchen in the south or as originally planned).

Of course, there are pros and cons in both cases. The following come to mind:

----------------------------------------
Kitchen upstairs, as originally planned:
----------------------------------------

+ 2 doors (living room and kitchen) possible from the hallway. Thus, more light in the probably rather dark hallway (through e.g. glass doors/sliding door)
+ Kitchen not so prominent
+ Door from kitchen to outside (east side) possible (herb bed and possibly a little bench for a coffee)
+ Tiles are easily doable (between wall unit and peninsula)

- longer way from kitchen to terrace
- living room in the south
- couch position visually reduces the room
- TV very prominent

----------------------
Kitchen in the south:
----------------------

+ Kitchen island possible
+ Living room area more separated
+ Direct terrace/garden access from kitchen
+ Another door in the south possible, thus more light
+ TV not so prominent

- Kitchen very prominent
- Tiling in the kitchen area a bit more difficult (only between wall unit and island would probably be the only option, but we are not sure if that would look good)

Best regards & have a nice Sunday!

I don't know how others feel about it. Kitchen aside, what really bothers me is the wall that sticks out into the living room like a lump. Forcing the staircase into the hallway does make the living area quieter but also extremely uncomfortable and cramped. I would never build like that.

The staircase plays a central role in a semi-detached house anyway, since you constantly have to go up and down on a small space. Life takes place on all levels. We also lived in a terraced house and the staircase was open in the living room. It didn't bother at all. Therefore, I would suggest you move the wall towards the entrance and sacrifice the spacious feeling of the living area.

At our REH, everything was also open - felt like 6 sqm more...

Thank you very much for your feedback. I want to briefly explain how the planning came about: We had the idea to relocate the staircase out of the living area so that the children later as teenagers would not always have to go through the living room to get to their rooms. Furthermore, we did not want to make the basement directly accessible from the living area (there will also be 2 bicycles in the basement). The semi-detached house is 8 m wide, 1.5-2 m wider than the usual semi-detached houses, and we thought that would actually fit. Maybe it would be a good compromise to leave the wall between the staircase and the living room as wide as originally planned in the planning of and only leave it open towards the kitchen or provide a large glass sliding door there?
