We have even more built-in lamps in the open space kitchen-dining-living area than the OP. A total of 22 in the cooking-dining area. However, none in the living area. In my view, direct light is firstly necessary and secondly not uncomfortable, except when eating. When "working," it cannot be too bright. Of course, indirect lighting should also be considered; that is no contradiction.

What do you have in the living area then? Only indirect light or a lamp over the coffee table?
I was at a friend's place yesterday; there are 9 built-in lamps in the living area, 2 in the dining area facing the window, one pendant lamp over the dining table, and 9 in the kitchen. Everything is arranged in one room without the kitchen being around a corner. I didn't find it either overwhelming or unpleasant there.

In the living room I have two floor lamps, a cabinet with interior lighting. Above the coffee table and dining table there are pendant lights (deliberately with halogen lamps). In the kitchen there are 12 recessed lights in the ceiling, which generously illuminate the work surfaces and the floor. Around the dining table there are 10 arranged in a rectangle.

... 12 recessed lights in the kitchen .. do you have wall cabinets with under-cabinet lighting? ... One should really consider the original poster's plan. A simple list of what one has oneself helps little here.

Do you happen to have a sketch or picture?

I would also say that recessed lights and pendant lights are sufficient. Personally, I simply would not like so much light visually, and it would not be necessary.
