You forget the costs for the nanny and the additional 2 rooms of your Munich penthouse apartment :p...I consider that exaggerated. Let's say 20 years, that would be 25,000€/year per child, so > €2,000/month. If that were the case, we would have a negative household income with 4 children... :D
Yes, children certainly cost more money than some might suspect. But you shouldn’t assume others have the same childcare costs as you do. There are huge differences. Depending on the federal state or even on the municipality, there are drastic differences. For example, our nursery place cost 145€ and currently the daycare place costs (although only half-day) just 18€ per month.
You can also talk to your employer about covering childcare costs instead of a salary increase. That benefits both employer and employee as it is tax-advantaged.
Nonetheless, I see all of this (unfortunately) as far too tight here. a) the costs are calculated too narrowly b) the times are not predictable and turbulent and c) the monthly rate here absolutely exceeds the comfort zone.
Yes, that is really quite unfair. I am also more rural (small town) in Bavaria and as far as I know there is a 100€ daycare subsidy from the state, so it only costs 18€ (actually 118€) if I understood correctly. But here my wife's employer pays for it. It used to be 145€, now only 18€.That's the nasty thing... here the daycare costs 560,- all day... in the countryside! At a buddy's place in Stuttgart (!) 350... elsewhere in Germany it's even free. Pure madness.
