Is an additional heater recommended in the bathroom with underfloor heating?

We are receiving a 500-liter water storage tank (filled with "heating water," a supplement to our ground source heat pump), which provides hot water via a heat exchanger (with four women, we need a lot of shower water, which a combined unit cannot provide). At the same time, this water storage tank serves to heat the bathroom through a second heating circuit (of course, underfloor heating). This second heating circuit can run independently of the heat pump and supply the bathrooms with a warm floor, for example, in spring/autumn. Conclusion for us: No additional heating necessary, we see towel warmers only as expensive toys.

Hello,

I want to bring this thread back to attention.

What is actually recommended now? We are getting an air heat pump with low temperature in the heating circuits. The whole house will be completely equipped with underfloor heating. In the bathrooms, the heating pipes will be laid closer together (7 cm).

Our heating installer also said that he would connect a towel radiator to the underfloor heating to get the bathroom up to temperature. So to speak, as an additional "external" heating surface to the underfloor heating surface in the bathroom. Is that sensible? If not, what should be done instead?

Hello,

in addition to the underfloor heating, we decided on a towel radiator that is heated by an electric heating cartridge.

Since we have now been living in the house for almost eight weeks, we have already been able to gain initial experience.

Our bathroom is nice and warm even without the towel radiator, but by now we also do not want to do without the warm towels.

I personally do not consider connecting the towel radiator to the underfloor heating to be optimal, since it is only supplied with the "normal" heating water, which depending on the setting is between 28 - 37° warm.

The electric heating cartridge is suitable for different temperatures...

Therefore, I can only wholeheartedly recommend our solution.

Best regards,

Dirk

Thank you for your reply, Dirk.

If the bathroom is warm even without the towel radiator, that's already good. We currently don't have warm towels, but I remember from my childhood that our towels were placed over the regular radiator. However, that is not a "MUST" for me. I just want a warm, cozy bathroom.

What kind of heating system do you have then? Also an air-to-water heat pump?

Hello,

yes, we have an air-water heat pump (Tecalor 403 SOL) with controlled residential ventilation & heat recovery. What a mess of abbreviations...

When commissioning the system in February, we had outdoor temperatures down to -20°C. The technician from Stiebel Eltron (parent company of Tecalor) set the flow temperature to 32°C and explained that if it gets too warm, we should reduce it in 0.5°C steps every 2 days.

Relatively quickly, we reached 27°C flow temperature – that’s how we feel comfortable now.

Regards,

Dirk

We have the LWZ 403 SOL - so the same air-water heat pump. Without an electric towel radiator, it wouldn't work in our bathroom. Why? We have a very small bathroom, with a shower + bathtub with corresponding recesses - so hardly any heating surface on the floor. Therefore, a towel radiator was a must for us, and in winter that thing regularly runs before the kids' baths,... So it also depends on your bathroom
