Hello everyone,

we have a single-family house (completed) and I am currently dealing with the topic of IP video intercom systems.

First about the existing installation:
We have a Cat 7 cable next to the front door for an outdoor station as well as 2 CAT7 cables on the ground floor and upper floor for connecting an indoor station. The starting point is always the electrical cabinet in the basement.
An electric door opener (no motor lock) is installed. The wiring from this also runs into the electrical cabinet in the basement.

After looking at some providers, I keep running into the following problem:

The outdoor stations are usually connected to the door opener. But in my case, no cable runs directly from the door opener to the outdoor station.

So far, I have only seen the solution from Doorbird, where the door opener is connected directly to the PoE switch and has no direct connection to the outdoor station.

My question very specifically:
1. Do you know of other providers where no direct connection between the outdoor station and the door opener is necessary?
2. Am I possibly making a mistake and the outdoor station could be connected to the door opener after all?
3. Is it common in new buildings that electricians no longer lay cables from the outdoor station to the door opener?

Thanks in advance.

If you lay the cable from the outdoor station to the door opener, anyone who removes the outdoor station from the outside can short-circuit the door and thus open it. So you should definitely avoid that.
I have now installed the GOLIATH/Dahua door intercom system and installed the corresponding security module in the distribution box.
Exactly what you want.

Depending on how many wires are needed, you can also route the signal through the distribution box with any random system, with the aforementioned disadvantage of the short-circuit possibility. You have a total of 8 cables available.

Thank you very much for the quick response. I would also like to use PoE. So could I simply connect 6 wires of the Cat cable to a PoE switch using RJ45 and use the other two wires for the door opener?

I found a link to a blog in the IP Phone Forum where exactly that was done with the Goliath or Dahua. I had considered that as well. But since I retrofitted, I simply ran 2 cables to the outdoor station for simplicity.

P.S: If you search for that, you should find something on a site with "wolf" in the name: “Connecting the Dahua VTO2000A with a LAN cable”

If POE is done according to "802.3at/at - Mode A", then 4 cores (PIN 1.2.3.6) are sufficient. However, only 100 MBit/s is possible, as known from the old economy wiring. How POE is currently implemented by manufacturers, I cannot say.

Is your LAN cable to the door station not in a conduit? If yes, then pull a thin cable afterwards.

Great, thanks again for the helpful tips.

Unfortunately, I have to say that the whole thing seems a bit overwhelming for me, so I’ll just ask very simply before I dive into the topic which wires I should use and how:

I unwrap the 8 wires of the Cat7 cable, then take 4 of the wires, put them into a keystone adapter, and thus have my LAN cable over which I can also run PoE. From the remaining 4 wires, I take 2 and connect them to Goliath’s security module, as if they were cables laid specifically for that purpose. I simply ignore the other two wires.

Is that correct?
