House orientation - south or west?

I had also considered an east orientation, and then just left a second one sitting somewhere in the sunny garden. We don’t want to build over the entire plot and are therefore looking for an option that keeps as much open as possible toward the east/south to the large garden of the (already known nice neighbors). Therefore, a house on the path would be rather bad. South would be possible, but that depends on the construction of the still unknown neighbor’s house on the path. We don’t want them to overshadow us with their house, then we wouldn’t have gained anything with the southern orientation and could just as well have done an east orientation.
