I keep reading something about filling. Has all that already happened? Setting a house on a slope and just filling everywhere somehow without planning beforehand? I think I'm out.

I understand it this way: the house is supposed to be at street level, and since there is a sloping embankment right at the transition between the street and the property, the driveway and parking spaces "had" to be built up.

Of course, you are still right: a slight slope could also be provided in the 11 m driveway and the house could be set a few decimeters lower... that would be even less invasive :)

would that be another option?

Exactly, the house is not located on a slope, but we have a lower-lying field as the plot, which even rises again in the rear area. In the front area, it goes about 1.3m deep from the street (described embankment) and from the building window then about 1m below the street.

Building the house lower than street level or especially manhole level was not recommended to us by the architect due to standing water. It could probably have been done, but then you have to rather extensively "formwork" the house to protect it from water. Better to build the hill for the house.

however, 1m is quickly reached with foundation cushion (gravel 50cm), insulation (EPS 8cm), base slab 25cm (concrete). There isn’t much left to fill. And if there is, filling is certainly cheaper than excavating. Compressible material is usually free (possibly delivery costs) from builders nearby. Disposal to the landfill often blows the secondary construction costs budget ;) And if the terrain slopes up again at the back, a gentle terrain modeling would be fine. But not so that a 3m high retaining wall has to be built at the back...

Yes, we are here with only "just" 10k extra costs still cheaper than expected/feared :D

I definitely took away gentle modeling, both cost-wise and aesthetically appealing.
