6 x 3 m kitchen and an island – you first have to furnish that. But otherwise, I would also swap the rooms. And keep the wall.

However you swap the rooms, the wall is very likely load-bearing and therefore not easily removable. If you want to open it here, a column will probably have to remain and a beam installed. Reversing the staircase direction, then moving the partition wall (with the living room door) upwards on the plan and leading it into the staircase opening would be another option for a bit more space. However, unfortunately, we do not know the other floors. Is there a basement? If so, a door there would probably be more convenient. But this does not change the structural issue.

I wouldn't leave it completely open. You don't just hear a lot from above and the smells from the kitchen drift into the upper floor, but it's also uncomfortable to look directly at the front door from the sofa. I still wouldn't swap the kitchen and living room because I find about 3 m too narrow for sofa to TV. You could consider Katja's suggestion and then make a door to the basement stairs. But is that really better?

The "main drawback" I see is the limited space of just under a meter in front of the stairs. You practically walk straight into the wall when coming down the stairs.

Especially since this column will probably remain:

I don't understand at all why this is always seen as such a problem here. I've had it like this in several apartments and in my parents' house, and I never found it disturbing.
