I think so too. No idea. I prefer to watch my garden grow and put it together myself. A garden, even a low-maintenance one, requires work. Whether with an espalier or not.

Winter jasmine is also not hrimis

Regarding the espalier, you should ask where you want to buy the plants. They know whether you can keep the existing one or if it has to be redone.

And I wouldn't know why an espalier should cause more work. You have to prune every hedge once or twice a year anyway.

I wonder what people do in the garden in winter that the neighbor or passersby are not allowed to see? Naked ice bathing?

I think people are very different. Here in the row house block, at the beginning, we agreed on 1m fences between neighbors so that the 4.60m narrow gardens would visually appear wider. Out of 5 households, 1 is bothered. But he’s bothered by everything anyway. Recently, he got lockable trash bins because on collection day we usually put the last trash bag wherever there’s still space. And someone spends 160€ so that he is not “affected” – and complains about the “imposed” costs. He can hardly use the terrace because from certain angles it could be seen from some spots in other gardens. He’s not allowed 4m high hedges; the world is unfair. There are people whose feelings are not clouded by any rational access to their actions – they need full privacy 24/7. But to be honest with myself: If we had money + a suitable property, we would have a swimming pond + sauna. I wouldn’t want to be seen there either, especially in winter.

A hedge not only protects the garden from being overlooked but depending on the location also the house. And especially in winter, it is dark for a long time, so you keep the lights on for a long time and people can look inside. And inside the house, one sometimes walks around unclothed and does not want to keep the blinds down all the time.

Additionally, it is also the other way around. Even in winter, I want to look outside not only at dull gray but at green.

Don’t you have curtains or comparable privacy screens?
I also find the desire to look into greenery in winter a bit strange. Aren’t you living at the wrong latitude?
