That was also my first thought.
: If you/your husband want that or can handle it emotionally, you could tell the neighbors directly that they should please inform you if there is feces on their property again. You then pick it up, bag it, and send the feces to a lab. Then the neighbors will know, in case they lied (that YOUR! cats were seen), that their lie will be exposed and will presumably refrain from making such claims in the future. Depending on what your cats look like, it could also simply be a case of mistaken identity.
Otherwise, I agree with you, at the described places it is more likely that martens, hedgehogs, etc. defecate, rather than cats.
However, I would still send the feces left on your driveway to a lab once, at least initially without communicating it.
I took a look at it, the cost is €85, which honestly is a bit too expensive for me, especially since the result doesn't say anything conclusive regardless. Also, you need several samples for that and they have to be kept somehow refrigerated, and I'm not putting that stuff in the fridge now...
I have decided to wait and not devote any more life time to this nonsense for now. If I see them we can talk about it again. However, I also have to dispose of what other animals (both neighborhood and wild) leave on my property, and I'm not going to participate in this kindergarten they started. I will ignore it as long as possible, and if it gets out of hand we will consider legal steps. It doesn't have to be a lawyer right away, you can first ask them to leave the property in writing, if needed install a camera, and report it to the police if necessary. Before that, I would try to talk to the mayor.
We will not play the garbage disposal service for the pets of the entire street in the long run.
