There is a parallel thread that deals exactly with this. However, my tone was strongly criticized there – I mentioned the facts ;)

We sat down again last night and brainstormed ourselves. A little warning: No, the granny flat was not yet part of the considerations. We will only sit down again with my parents about this on the weekend. Our focus was on the ground floor and especially on eliminating the bottleneck on the way to the dining and living area and significantly shortening the paths to the upper floor. We have already mentioned several times that we were not yet 100% satisfied with the kitchen itself. Now we would like to get valuable feedback on our idea. We will also talk to our architect again in the next few days.

And again in 3D:

I'll put it this way, better leave that to the architect. These offsets and corners and doors just make the room restless and a large passage area. I also don't think you can plan your house independently of the [Einliegerwohnung]. And the bulky door in the kitchen area? Really?

There is a lack of storage space. There is a lack of specifications for 3 residential units. The desperate, unnecessary 3 residential units are making life difficult for you. Why do you stick to the plan? Use correct measurements for the gimmicks. You can only enter your pantry sideways with empty hands and size 38 shoes. There is no wardrobe, bedroom suitable for vampires, all-purpose room separated by a large walkway. Your parents should consider exactly how and to what extent they want to live with limitations in the apartment.

I already knew that you are a tough audience... :D

We do not claim at all that the draft will be implemented 1:1 as it is. It was merely a thought experiment to eliminate some points of criticism. Of course, we will consult with the architect again, especially regarding the third residential unit.

I wouldn't call it desperate clinging either. We are not doing this exclusively because of the funding, even though that is always assumed. We are mainly doing this so that we do not limit ourselves, so that we might have the possibility to separate the ground floor and the upper floor.

I can understand the criticism of the pantry. It is really not optimal like that. It needs to be made 50-60 cm wider. Or removed completely and instead simply make the kitchen bigger (= automatically more storage space in the kitchen).

You are blocking yourselves now.
You have to meet requirements for 3 residential units that are missing in your planning.

You are making compromises now and in 25 years you will be sitting alone in the house with 3 residential units for singles/couples that are no longer up to date.
I know 2 houses that were prepared for 3 residential units, in such a way that families can also live in the residential unit. We also moved out of the multi-generation house. Residential unit too small, not up to date. Exchange not possible, because the residential unit optimal for families is also the one suitable for a wheelchair. No matter what, we would have had to pay six figures for a compromise. We could have moved to the parents-in-law. There were also 2 other residential units planned there at one time. Six-figure investment, longer commute to work, waiting lists for kindergarten, etc. and why move to a little town where I don’t feel comfortable.
