We also have the stairs right in front of the door – it’s just a layout-friendly option. Yes, I have to vacuum my stairs relatively often. But this has nothing to do with the proximity to the front door. Almost no dirt comes up from there. The real culprits for us are mostly the cats, who carry dirt up from all sides (they don’t come in through the main entrance). If, on the other hand, you have well-behaved housemates, I see the problem very relaxed. :)

I wouldn't be so much afraid of the dragged-up dirt. What would bother me more is having to walk through a puddle of snow or over grit in my socks on the way upstairs in winter (I am a bit sensitive to crumbs under my feet because of an accident with glass).

Even without a glass accident, I am so picky when it comes to crumbs that can end up under my feet (even with socks on) :)
And moisture (mud from outside) can also be very disgusting.

Secondly, I would be afraid for the wood on the stairs, that it might be damaged by grains of sand.

Thirdly, to me, a staircase belongs to cozy living inside, a front door to exit outside.

Ok, off-topic again for the OP [emoji2]
If it is as it is, I would keep a broom within reach of the entrance and/or set rules to take off shoes before the door whenever possible.

It seems to me that the problem for you is more the area in front of the entrance than behind it. At our place, the path is paved and under the porch roof there are 2 doormats one behind the other (1st coarse rubber, next stage soft).

Basically, I agree with you regarding the dirt in front of the stairs. It was extreme until 3 weeks ago, when the paths were not yet paved and we vacuumed 3-4 times daily in the entrance area. Currently, we have a dirt-trapping mat inside in front of the front door and a dirt-trapping runner extending into the hallway. Once we finish grouting the paved areas next week, the doormat will finally be placed in front of the door.

We did not see a cost-effective way to plan the stairs differently for ourselves and therefore ended up with this floor plan. Our floor plan was only meant to show the original poster how we solved the desired features. I should mention that I consider our square meterage as the lower limit for the room layout. It should be noted that we were very limited by the building envelope (12.6m x 7.6m).

I don’t know how to fit 60m² of living-dining-kitchen, a toilet with a shower, utility room, and hallway?! For example, I wouldn’t go below 8m² for the utility room.

We also have the stairs directly to the right of the front door, and because of the stroller, the hallway gets quite crumbly... so the vacuum cleaner is used 1-2 times more, but whatever, it feels like 30 seconds.
