Yes, the hose should always be as short as possible, no matter what you connect in relation to foodstuffs such as drinking water. A fixed connection is always better; the tank causes even more problems (cleaning, odors, limited quantity).
The line bursting is more than unlikely, as 1/4 inch hoses with the corresponding connectors used in pneumatics and hydraulics are used here. These usually withstand significantly higher pressures and also fit very well in the fittings. User error is disregarded.
