In the East, just like in the West, different people have the chance to own residential property. Here too, I have to distinguish where I want to buy the house/apartment. Four teachers together cannot afford a single-family house in Munich either; a existing property in Görlitz seems more affordable to me. We have already discussed this in detail in several threads. I fully agree with you.

No, the reluctance about the house is rather small. The reluctance at the age of 75 or 80 to leave the neighborhood where you have known many people for 30, 40, 50 years... and move into an anonymous rental place in the city, where the neighbors might call the police after three weeks if there’s a strange smell in the stairwell...
That reluctance is very high.

Then that's how it is. But it happens rather rarely. What if you become unable to work at 50 and can no longer pay the installments?

That happens much more often...

Then the installment is reduced and nothing is repaired anymore. That’s what happened to the previous owner of my house. I can tell you how the previous owner dealt with this: Leaky pipes are repaired by sticking a felt-tip pen into the hole. Can be seen in the attached picture at the top right. Forgive me that I can’t find a better picture of it right now.

And is that supposed to be livable or the freedom so highly praised here in the forum, when you live in your own house until the very last second? When I see such accounts and pictures, I always ask myself: Do I want to live/house/live like that, while I see on TV that it can be different?

My clear answer: no, I don’t want that.

I have already given the example of my father (79 years old) here a few times. He lives alone in his house, which he bought in 1974. In some of the rooms, the original windows and balcony and terrace doors are still in place. To heat the building so that he feels comfortable, he needs 2,500 liters of heating oil per year, which equals about 300 euros per month. Since energy costs have been so high, the money is really tight. I don’t even want to talk about the backlog of investments and repairs. The drain in the bathroom is leaking; he doesn’t have it repaired because of the cost. So he just forces himself to go to the laundry room in the basement and somehow washes there.

Our neighbor, the same age, separated from his house several years ago and moved into a 3-room apartment. Monthly heating costs after the increase from October: 50 euros.

Where exactly is the problem with being unable to work at 50? I am secured in such a way that, in addition to the statutory pension, I will receive another 1,000 pension. Moreover, my wife also works and brings money home. My wife is similarly secured and would receive more money in the event of occupational disability than she currently earns part-time. If one of us dies, the risk life insurance pays. So it’s no problem for the other either.

Where exactly is the problem with occupational disability now? It is a completely calculable risk against which you can insure yourself for a small amount.

Before the objection comes that my 1,000-euro coverage costs a fortune: Nope, the insurance costs me exactly 0 euros and the contributions are completely covered by the employer.
