A bit of exercise never hurts ;)
It doesn't bother me at all to go to the basement to do the laundry. The pantry and utility room are separate in the basement. I wouldn't store food with the laundry either.
If the living area looks nicer because of it, I couldn't care less about climbing the stairs. I'd rather go up the 16 steps twice a day than have a hallway atmosphere at dinner.

Why must they be separated?

In this case - always depending on the concept and floor plan. Technology and heating in the ground floor is not necessarily required and if it can be avoided, why not - it potentially saves 3 sqm of living space - after all 5 k€. I would put laundry on the ground floor so that the distances are not so long - if it makes sense; alternatively even on the upper floor if you can manage it properly. The ground floor has the advantage of external access, the upper floor has the advantage of being a bit closer to the producer. With us, everything is also in the multifunction room on the ground floor, as the architects from the green forum always complain - after all it is not a walk-through room ;-)

I agree that after years it gets annoying to carry everything down to the basement and back up again later. Eventually, endless discussions with the kids erupted over every bottle of water or bringing down the laundry, etc.

But I don't understand why I would cultivate cultures in dry goods when storing them in the utility room. Fresh goods are stored in our fridge or in the kitchen in the fruit or vegetable bowl.

Sensitive goods shouldn't be stored for long anyway.
