For us, it also became a new build with a large granny flat in the attic; it was also offered by the parents as an option. An extension/conversion of a small semi-detached house from the 60s would have been somehow possible, but the various examples implemented in the neighborhood fortunately prevented us from doing so. For mother, it was immediately great to move into a modern, open apartment; for father, it was significantly more difficult, even though he offered it that way. With him too, every bush, every piece of wood was discussed, which was basically really sad for all of us because through his war and displacement experiences he had already once lost his "home," even if we only moved 15 minutes away. From this, it is probably always a very individual decision, but both sides must be able to say no; otherwise, there is a risk of unpleasant times. My parents had the same experience. They put money in, fought for every screw, every stone. Then ended up building new anyway.
