Hi Peter here,
my wife and I are currently planning a complete renovation of our house, among other things the topic of heating modernization came up.
We also came across infrared heaters, but we are not sure if such a heating method makes sense given the electricity prices etc.

Does anyone possibly have such a heater in use and can say something about it?

Best regards
Peter and Hannelore

Due to the fact that an infrared heater converts electricity practically 1:1, this type of heating is only reasonable for an entire house if the heating demand is correspondingly low.
You are renovating to KfW40 standard or better? Then yes.
I renovate you a nice house? Then never.

Welcome to the forum,
say something about the current heating,
coal stoves, gas, oil, central heating, radiators,
underfloor heating, etc., hot water?
Which area needs to be heated and how many kWh have you consumed in a year

Hi Peter,

apart from the question regarding cost-effectiveness, I am raising an additional aspect that must be taken into account. The radiant heat of the IR heaters is perceived differently by everyone. Some swear by it and find it pleasant, for example I cannot appreciate it and find it unpleasant based on my experience. For me, this type would only be a last resort, but not suitable as a main heating system. Financially, not at all.

Thank you very much!
So accordingly, only in the bathroom or individual rooms?

We are planning an upgrade to a low-energy/efficiency house and therefore want to explore all possibilities extensively. The question is whether, with regard to the future (both economically and environmentally), it would be more sensible to rely on electricity. Of course, electricity prices always rise, but that is no different with gas, etc.

I didn't want to completely demonize or exclude them. But yes, from my point of view, they fulfill the purpose best, for example, in the bathroom or as an "emergency solution" in individual rooms.

It may be that IR heaters should not be excluded as a main source in this planned upgrade, provided my note about possible "unpleasant sensations" does not apply.

Nevertheless, I personally consider other heating types to be more sensible solutions for a planned major efficiency upgrade.
Here it was only about your question regarding IR in general :)
