The question with home automation is what you want to have. And programming is the most important factor. As long as you have a kind of roadmap beforehand of what you want to do and (especially if you yourself can’t think of anything, because appetite comes with eating, as is well known) at least foresee the right components in the right places, then you can do a lot yourself.

And on the topic of Loxone: We have the system as an automation component and partial system as a supplement to KNX and that has proven itself. I quickly distanced myself from a pure Loxone installation because a) it takes up a lot of space in the cabinet and b) it is just as expensive as comparable KNX components.

We procured everything ourselves, planned it, and also installed it with the help of our electrician and are currently refining the programming. Costs for the components are up to €10,000; we don’t have everything yet. The programming consumes an enormous amount of time and you have to pay the professional accordingly for it. But you have to get involved yourself anyway because you always come up with new ideas after moving in.

What have we done: shutter control and automation, lighting, sockets, controlled residential ventilation control, heating connection (still to come, but just for rudimentary control, ERR is nonsense), front door communication, garage connection (still to come), window monitoring, etc. etc. I still have plenty of ideas.

But with appropriate own effort you can spend significantly less; >€20,000 definitely wouldn’t have been worth it to me. The question is whether the OP wants to do it himself at that point or prefers to have the professional do it. The point is that you are usually dependent on the latter afterwards.
