Thank you very much. I do read a lot here, but the window forum still too rarely. However, the mentioned thread is about large windows over 2m, I have to manage a maximum of about 1.4 m or so, no idea where the measurements are taken from. As I said, the window fitter spontaneously mentioned 25 cm on the phone, but I believe that's just what he always uses. Can it be smaller??

I have to correct myself: Much less than 0.9 m is not possible because of the roof slope

Exact quote from the engineer who created the development plan for us, on the question of the maximum height of the house above street level: 20 cm too high is not a problem, no one measures that.

Exact quote from the building authority on the question of a 9 x 6 garage, etc. being exempt from approval: if we are informed by the surveyor that the garage measures 9.40 x 6.10, none of us will come out and cause trouble. You just shouldn’t overdo it.

The handling of the topic naturally varies from district to district, but for us, that would not have been a problem. We followed all the rules anyway because it was planned in compliance, but I probably wouldn’t have had major concerns about doing it if there was a significant benefit. However, we only have neighbors we know in the new development area, where definitely no one would have spoken up.

PS: I can confirm that nagging leads to faster processing.

PPS: For example, we have 22 cm roller shutter boxes everywhere. Window height from 1.1m to 2.1m. 20 cm should work then, if a 22 cm box is enough for 2.1m windows in our case. They have small aluminum slats.

The architect said that instead of a 90x120 window, a 120x90 window could also be installed. Could that be possible?

Sure - if you rotate it 90° it fits easily
If this is the second escape route, then check the building regulations of your federal state regarding this.

in BY for example

"Windows that serve as escape routes according to Art. 31 para. 2 sentence 2 must be at least 0.60 m wide, at least 1 m high, openable from the inside, and installed no higher than 1.20 m above the finished floor level. If these windows are in roof slopes or roof structures, their bottom edge or an exit in front of them may not be more than 1 m horizontally away from the eaves edge."

Of course, it only states for NRW: "(5) Windows that serve as escape routes according to § 33 paragraph 2 sentence 2 must have a clear opening of at least 0.90 m x 1.20 m and be arranged no higher than 1.20 m above the finished floor level."
