Please stay reasonable.

I suspect that instead of copper, stainless steel pipes were installed. Steel pipe is completely sufficient and just like stainless steel, it is just as high-quality as copper, if not even better. Therefore, I cannot see any defect here. The thermal expansion of the steel pipes is significantly lower. Thus, the installation of the steel pipe could very well have technical and structural reasons.

In a closed heating circuit, there is no air. Therefore, it cannot rust. Especially under plaster, copper is rather unfavorable.

To now claim 9,250 euros in damages from this is very cheeky. If I were the contractor, I would offer to replace the pipes for you. You really don’t want that mess. What happens then? A rightly annoyed craftsman breaks open your walls, maybe damages other pipes, and messes up the whole thing by patching it up again with copper pipes.

Your tiles and grout will become crooked, the dirt will be in the house, maybe he’ll even catch something with the ladder and scratch your front door badly.

It’s only about your ego. Are you by any chance a teacher?

So take the 500 euros and that’s that. What’s this all about?

I insisted on carrying out this work, but the builder declined because the costs involved would be disproportionate. According to my friend who is a sanitary and supply technician, the costs for the replacement would be well over €10,000. Not to mention the consequential costs (the bathroom and guest WC would have to be re-tiled, the house would be uninhabitable during that time as no hot water would be available, so the builder would have to arrange replacement accommodation, ....). The consequential costs would also be on his tab. As already stated, this concerns three parties and we agreed on this amount together. And no, I’m not a teacher and it’s not about my ego ;). It’s about facts, such as that copper is less prone to corrosion than steel according to the literature. If this means I have to replace the pipes 20 years earlier, then I am indeed suffering a significant loss here, which is not covered by €500.

I would not ask your friend the plumber and supply technician about the costs but about the consequences. If you had to replace the pipes 20 years earlier, the current replacement would not be disproportionate in my understanding.

According to his assessment, copper pipes would last 10 to 20 years longer than steel pipes.

Then clarify that again with an expert. If that is the case, you can proceed. If not, you are just using a sledgehammer to crack a nut.

We would like to avoid the expert because we are afraid of the costs...
