But please don’t rush. :D:cool:;) But the topic here is not the creation of living space. I am talking about existing buildings and in this thread especially about the obligation to green the garden. Further sealing per se is first and foremost bad for the environment and cities. That people should be stacked to give the environment a chance is in my opinion a pseudo-solution. You still know my opinion about this, right? The solution is not skyscrapers but condos.

Mandated or voluntary? What you want already exists in the world: prosperity. Societies at our level of prosperity have on average a slightly negative reproduction rate – completely voluntary. How do we get the rest of the world to that level without overusing the planet’s resources? No idea! But I do know that it does not happen in single-family house gardens. The main argument for a nature-friendly garden is not morality but that there is no reason against it. Fear of gardening is due to a lack of gardening education. Something can be done about that, but you have to keep your finger out of it, otherwise the addressees will immediately shut down. And yet, in the end, living is about how we use space for living. Quite simple.

Good point about the feeling of confinement. But if a privacy screen is absolutely desired, it can be softened somewhat by plants. Recently, I borrowed "Gardening Around the House" by Noel Kingsbury from the library with ( the library tip is a suggestion, there is an incredible amount of literature on the subject). It contains quite a few smaller urban gardens that hide their walls well behind plants and don't look that small at all.

My father has a semi-detached house in Hamburg with a 235 sqm plot. Small but nice front garden with lots of greenery and shapes, terrace at the back, a little bit of lawn, beds, hedges, specimen shrubs to break up the view, columnar trees for fruit, raised beds along the house wall for tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, strawberries, etc. Additionally, a tool shed with summer kitchen and carport with tool shed. It feels like being on a 500 sqm plot. ...around the corner to the left is the strip with raised beds and columnar trees.

I assume the bushes at the very back belong to the neighbors and are simply "shared" when it comes to making the garden look bigger? ;)
And even if it’s not the case here: in our 150 sqm terraced house garden I had a (wide) view of the neighbor’s plants and thus visually had a huge garden… but that doesn’t work so well with privacy fences. However, everyone had privacy thanks to bushes of appropriate size or where privacy is needed, namely _at_ the terrace, not 10 meters away from it. Then privacy is also wind protection at the same time.

The very tall arborvitae belongs to the neighboring property. The two trimmed thujas (green+yellow) belong to my father.
