The wiki says "the occasional offender" and according to statistics most burglaries happen during the day and to a good extent by professionals who are attributed to organized crime. Whether the 3 minutes are still representative then would have to be asked of an expert.

We have triple glazing with secure locking and the front door locks on all four sides with bolts. We also have 2 dogs that immediately raise the alarm and surround visitors at any unusual noise. The grilles over the basement window wells are secured from the inside and all [Lüftungsfenster] are barred.

We do not have a dog and will not get one either. Placing a dog bowl somewhere is certainly a good idea. But I believe that very few burglars try to get in without having scouted the situation beforehand. And then you would quickly see/hear that there is no dog...

Of course, we do not have the money for a highly professional system with a security service making visits.

The main point will probably be to properly secure the windows first - as mentioned, double glazing from ’95. Regarding these Rc2n locks, we will inquire further.

However, no one here has any idea what retrofitting such mushroom head locks would roughly cost?

My parents now also have such grilles in front of all windows that would allow climbing in from that height. Visually, it is quite unusual.

We recently attended the presentation by the Kripo, however, due to staff shortages it was not given by an officer but by a VDS employee for security technology. Therefore, he relativized some statements of the Kripo because they were somewhat exaggerated.

- Front door: apparently only 2% of all burglaries occur through the front door, most happen through windows, preferably balcony doors.
- The burglar's standard tool is still a common screwdriver for prying open.
- Most burglaries occur during twilight in the autumn/winter months.
- An alarm system hardly helps because it basically only alerts you that someone is in your house. By the time you have gotten help or it arrives, the intruder is already gone. Neighbors usually ignore an alarm because it is probably a false alarm.
- Motion detector lights are helpful because burglars are reluctant to stay in the spotlight.
- Roller shutters as burglary protection only help if they are lowered all the way to the stop so that the shutter cannot be pushed up even a centimeter.

In the end, it actually turned out that the current standard is not so bad, but it is still the residents who give burglars opportunities through tilted windows and access to less protected windows.

That's certainly a point where you don't leave the house and keep all the windows tilted open...

Do lockable window handles help much if there are no protections against prying open? Probably not, right?

Rather no, not every burglar bothers to drill a hole at the height of the handle with a drill and drill machine to operate the lever. But that would be the next easy possibility. Against that, however, the lockable window handle and a drill protection help...

By the way, I have to correct myself, it's almost 10% who break in through the front door. I had that wrong in my head...
