We also have the room upstairs, but "behind" the bathroom. You can notice it when a machine is running. But it's not disturbing.

Children up to 10-12 anyway don’t mind noises. And for the older ones, you could even be considerate so that the washing machine doesn’t run in the middle of the night. If necessary.

But if this is important to you, the architect should consider thicker walls and soundproof doors to the utility room.

Not having a floor plan yet is actually great in that respect, because you can immediately avoid the mistake of developing the upper floor layout only after the one on the ground floor ;-) Regarding the question of washing machines and dryers, I can assure you that nothing of the sort is heard either from the apartment next door or the one above.

A soundproof door is a great thing. It only cost about €200 extra or so. Worth considering.

In our new build, we also placed the utility room on the upper floor, between the bathroom and the children's room. The washing machine and dryer are installed elevated inside a cabinet.

Today's appliances are getting quieter and most have a start time selection, so washing can be planned conveniently if the child is not sleeping or if they are very sensitive to noise.

But we could also march around the house with drums and trumpets; our daughter seemingly hears and is disturbed by nothing :D

Edit: I can provide a real report based on experience from mid/end of June ;)

Thank you all - that already helps me a lot :).
We had already planned a soundproof door and possibly extra soundproofing on the adjacent interior walls.
How big is your utility room on the upper floor each? And how big is your technical room on the ground floor in return?
One of the considerations was to be able to plan the technical room on the ground floor smaller by moving the utility room upstairs.
