...and based on the example of the shown pictures, I would personally install more shelves on the right wall where the vacuum cleaner is now hanging. That would make it possible to store significantly more while maintaining a sufficiently wide passage.

Here is a storage space under a straight staircase, however a wardrobe (door on the side) See attachments!
... by the way finished for almost 3 weeks:

Primer, pine wood (before it got scarce), simple shelf rails, clothes rail and glaze for the boards from a total of 3 hardware stores (Corona time), high-quality leftover paint, Faktum cabinet and Ikea cubes from inventory. 2 days of work and now lots of joy. Right wall still has potential... Ikea currently charges 39€ for delivery, so some things have to wait.
Summary: from about 28 spots for pairs of shoes now... I can hardly count them :D, definitely sufficient and space for empty bags in the corner... judge for yourself: (everything is straight, the crookedness comes from the panoramic shot :)

Is the gap between the stairs and the boxed-in area difficult to clean?
No... it's actually quite manageable. I just had to remove the vacuum cleaner nozzle.
