Such a question with no information.. always read in advance before posting an opening thread. And then also have some patience. The first impression counts, after all.

Regarding the wall: No, it absolutely doesn’t have to be. It separates best at the height of the terrace. If you don’t like the plaster, you can let it be covered with climbing plants or plant a bush in front of it. 1.80 is probably, as established everywhere in the LBOs and neighborly guidelines, the limit at the property boundary and must therefore be enough! And of course 17.5 or a 15 cm thick wall is also sufficient.

We had something like that also in two heights, so about 4.50 m long in total – as deep as a good standard terrace. At the house 1.60, then 1 meter toward the garden. But I think it was not anchored to the house. Anyway: don’t make life and living together so complicated.

The neighbor definitely thought along, while the snoring neighbors, that is you, are now coming with complications. Ultimately you want it, right? So: split the wall, agree on a nice finish and be happy that the neighbor took care of something. Of course you are free to put a thicker wall on your property. :)

Thank you very much for the answer. So the neighbor only has a 3-meter deep terrace, we want to make ours 4 meters. However, the canopy may only extend into the garden as far as his, so 3 m. How far should the wall then go on our side, 3 or 4 m? And we are in RLP, according to the internet here, you can build up to 2 m high without a permit.

To me, this looks a bit like [Schalungssteinen], not very carefully filled by hand with concrete. Are you sure that this is a foundation for a wall, meaning deep enough, properly founded, and possibly reinforced? Or did the neighbor just retain his terrace with 1-2 rows of stones?

No, exactly not, the company that built his terrace also did the street for us and was a complete failure. The neighbor builds everything standard, as long as he is the first to finish, the terrace collects water, water drips into his rooftop terrace, he already has a boundary to the street, a 1m high wall that actually fell down, it was 15m long. That's why I'm taking matters into my own hands now and want to be sure. What is important for the foundation then?

Build deep enough below the frost line, fill correctly and compact. What did the neighbor do?

This requires proper planning. Ideally together with the terrace roofing. Hopefully, the neighbor's shuttering blocks are not partly on your property. Because you can't use them, as in my opinion they are not suitable as the foundation of a wall.

Why a wall? It can be done differently. For example, a side element of the roofing.
