Take old/previous furniture to the new house or get "everything" new?

For me, furniture are companions on the journey. Almost all are cherished and chosen with care and love. Even if it is just an Ikea wardrobe. But in my life, there is also change - a new era, a new need, a necessary purpose, or falling in love with a chest of drawers or color… sometimes also a DIY project. But none of this has anything to do with moving into a new house, as I have not changed 100% during the planning. I also don’t buy an entire outfit right away when I need new pants.

We also took ourselves 100% with us during the move and of course did not suddenly change. But with the new house began a new chapter in life – children move out and become neighbors, from a small town it becomes a mini-village, from the relative tightness of a row house settlement it becomes space with unrestricted privacy, from many rooms it becomes few, from much accumulated household it becomes little... We thought about this for a long time and implemented it. Therefore, we consciously took along things that were important to us. In dealing with this, not much remained, but what remained we value very much. What was not important simply did not come along. It is simply a different form of selection. I think that especially with this topic, everything is possible and nothing is mandatory – completely without judgment.

We also decluttered so incredibly much.
Actually, we had already started packing the boxes about 6 weeks earlier in order to a) be able to pack and especially unpack everything systematically. With countless things, we asked ourselves when we last had the item in our hands and then decided "Away!".
I found it very astonishing how much stuff accumulates over the years, things you sometimes no longer even know exist after a while.
That was a very liberating feeling.

But as far as furniture is concerned, we took most of it with us. In the end, however, it wasn’t that much. In the old condo, there were many built-ins from the carpenter. Wardrobe, shoe cabinet, living room wall – we could hardly take those with us and they were thus sold along with the apartment. The bathroom furniture also could not be reused. The rest, so bedroom, kids’ room, living room, came along. Which we also really enjoyed.
Sure, buying new is great. But regardless of the money, in my opinion one should also ask oneself whether it is necessary…

I don’t think buying new is great at all. In a frenzy of new-new-new, I bought a new table. The old one would have done just fine. The new one is nicer and I like it. But it wasn’t necessary. That’s how I realize that the huge amounts from buying the house have clouded my mind. What are a thousand and a half for a table when you’ve just spent ten thousand on the kitchen.

That's exactly what I mean. New can be great, but necessary?

I feel the same way, I have become completely insensitive to prices.

3000€ for something pointless, makes sense!
