Single-family house: Is the rate realistic? How much house can we afford?

It was a pity about the 2.5m tall Yellow River Magnolia, which died three months after planting while we were on vacation. 400€ gone...

Maybe less sensitive exotic stuff in the mature state. Native plants tolerate the climate better and young ones are also cheaper ;)

With 500 to 1000 € you won’t get far for that area. The plants on our rooftop terrace have already cost more, where we have about 25 m2 planting area. I really hate to take away your illusion here, but even 10 euros / m2 for a perennial bed is not feasible from my point of view, unless you grow all plants yourself or the plants are only a few cm tall at purchase on average.

The dynamic is definitely planned. Initial perennials combined with seeding, so you have continuous action in the garden. The same applies to hedges, they come as small plants sown with edge mixtures. And we certainly won’t fill the entire garden with ornamental beds either. Subtract from that the built-up areas for house, carport, garden house, terrace, plus paths, vegetable garden, meadow areas. From a 700sqm plot, only a smaller part remains which is actually more expensive.

And I can tell you from experience that some plants, e.g. lilacs, take years to grow from a small plant to a usable size...

For the 1000 m² garden you either need to enjoy gardening or have a corresponding budget. Although we bought an existing property and renovated it: a lot came from relatives, neighbors, and friends. I think we bought maybe 1-2 perennials. We got the rest like that.

I can only confirm that. When buying the plants, I eventually stopped counting the costs, but it certainly amounted to a high four-figure sum. For a garden over 1000m2, it will definitely be five figures if you don't just want very young and small plants. Or it becomes a lawn, but then eventually a ride-on mower is needed.....

Or you buy the plants through classified ads, where you can get them in any size for little money.

Don't worry, we also planted a few willow trees :)

Otherwise I might end up needing a combine harvester and a moon rocket or something... As for the garden, just this much: All my relatives have large gardens, from which we can get dozens of cuttings and sometimes larger plants for free. There is even a riding mower available that we could borrow if necessary. One of my aunts also works in a nursery and could get us bigger purchases "with a discount." Also: The garden doesn’t have to be "finished" on day one. Plants just need time to grow...

You certainly don’t need a moon rocket, but a "rocket stove" could be especially useful for the winter months in the coming years ;) Please don’t forget irrigation when planning the garden, e.g. via a pipeline system and various water outlets or sprinklers. It’s quite expensive to purchase - I chose the Gardena products - but you can lay it yourself and once it’s set up, it saves a lot of work and the plants will thank you with lush growth :)
