An air heat pump is subject to distance regulations of 3 meters - often rather difficult with terraced houses - at least that was the case two years ago.

This is not correct. There is no general requirement, only different court decisions. Normally, this is not a problem. Latest ruling from Mainz: "The administrative court now upheld the complaint and annulled the notices ordering the relocation of the system. The air heat pump does not have to maintain a minimum distance to the neighboring property. Only buildings or structures from which effects similar to buildings emanate must observe a distance according to the regulations of the Rhineland-Palatinate building code." In my opinion, this also applies to Baden-Württemberg.

So what was the "upgrade" you had to do for KfW55?

It is a two-family house that I am renovating. The upgrade was as follows to move from KFW 100 to KFW 55: In addition to a new heating system (previously oil) for my ground floor apartment, the tenant in the upstairs apartment also had to get a heat pump. This included replacing her radiators and replacing the windows. That was it. The insulation was already suitable for KfW 55 from the start. But it is relatively simple, as adding more insulation only costs a little extra. Costs: Heat pump connected to the old pipes approx. €4,000, new radiators approx. €2,000, new windows approx. €8,000 Result: Almost doubled subsidy for everything to approx. €14,000 (+/- €1,000) - instead of 27.5% on €85,000 = €23,000 there is 40% on €100,000 = €40,000 subsidy (numbers are very rough as I am still in the process)

Thank you. Sure, a two-family house with double funding is of course even more profitable. But basically, that still sounds manageable if you have to do extra external insulation for it..

Not double funding. The grant is only given once on the costs. I am renovating with equity and am not using a loan.
