Hello,
we want to build a small single-family house on our property. The location of the property is basically good, only in the mornings and evenings there is increased noise pollution due to commuter traffic.

I measured the sound pressure with an app on the smartphone. I cannot say anything about the accuracy of the values, but they approximately (subjectively) correspond to what I know from confirmed measurements on comparable properties.

When no vehicle passes by: 55 dB.
With a car: up to 68 dB.
With a truck: up to 78 dB.

At the current stage, the noise level outdoors is too high for me. To possibly be able to build on the property anyway, I am considering a noise protection wall and a building form facing away from the street (solid, noise protection windows, insulation with mineral wool) (see attachment, noise protection wall red dashed).

I have no doubt that the desired peace can be achieved inside the house through measures. But how does it look outdoors?

I am already in contact with a specialist for soundproof walls, next I wanted to discuss the overall planning with an architect. For that, I wanted to be able to provide him with a few wishes and ideas. Therefore, my questions:

[*]What do you estimate, which reduction could be achieved by a suitable building form on the terrace (e.g. -15 dB)?
[*]Do you have suggestions for the building form to keep the noise pollution low on the terrace?
[*]Are there experiences with noise reduction from the combination of noise protection wall and street-facing-away terrace (e.g. noise protection wall -15 dB, house form another -8 dB)?
[*]Do you have further suggestions for measures I could take to keep noise pollution low?

Thank you very much for your suggestions!

Best regards

Werner

The best result takes place in the mind. After a few days, you no longer hear the traffic. I am also directly on the street. You can still hear the trucks despite the LS wall and abundant planting, but you don't notice them. Only if you pay attention. What currently bothers me more is my neighbor, who starts his car right in front of my bedroom window at 6:00 a.m. I also specifically planned my bedroom on the side away from the street.

These are developments you can't stop. First a double garage and basement, now a lot of bicycles blocking the garage. Now he is standing in front of the garage.

I wouldn’t like LS walls on the property that much.

Thank you, . That is true, the actual "annoyance" usually takes place in the mind. Nevertheless, there are studies that confirm all kinds of illnesses as a result of noise. To avoid regretting my decision later, I want to exclude all possible disturbance factors. At the risk of being too picky and ending up achieving nothing. I am aware of that. Currently, I am reading all kinds of posts on the internet about desensitization to noise. Let's see if I can make progress here. Ultimately, I have to be able to live with my decision instead of regretting it.

So the enclosed noise barrier wall in the shape you drew will definitely be effective. On laermorama you can calculate a few values; the reduction will actually be roughly within that range – if the wall is truly continuous and made of a suitable material. Depending on wind and weather, the wall may sometimes be a few dB more or less effective, but it is definitely sensible. You just have to accept the wall itself and, if applicable, the shadow it causes.

Simulate on various sun position websites whether shadow casting by the wall will be relevant at the planned height. If your plan is oriented north, it could actually be quite good as planned. How high is the wall planned opposite the terrace?

I could also imagine that you will initially build only the left half of the wall. Then you can see if any significant noise comes from the right side behind the house at all. That could already be sufficiently shielded. If you are very noise-sensitive, then build it completely right away.

Nothing. You won't achieve that just due to the reflections from the surrounding buildings. Look into sound propagation. Noise barrier walls as an active noise protection measure are only suitable close to the source at reasonable heights for a reduction of the immission. The further the wall moves away from the source towards the receiver, the higher it has to be to still have any effect. In your case, that means building height. If the reflections weren't there. Orient the building more north-south, like 87 and 87.Terrace to the south. As mentioned, 15 dB is unrealistic. As said, at that distance from the emission source and at reasonable wall heights... probably not. Maybe psychoacoustically, but the measurably verifiable effect will be limited.
