Currently we live in a two-family house in a large apartment, it feels like living in a bungalow house (so good) - neighbors are great. If I could definitely get something like that including the surroundings, except for various little things here that annoy regarding living quality, I would take it.

Well, rather the fear of negative consequences, that probably describes it exactly. This thread won't be able to take that away from me either. But talking is known to help.

Have you addressed the owner about buying?

What is the reason for your general desire for ownership? So what are the motivations behind it?

I also always observe that. In DE, building a house is almost considered a once-in-a-lifetime decision. In other countries, they are definitely more relaxed.

In my family environment abroad, it is the same. If it no longer fits, it is sold again and that's that. @TE this is probably the uncertainty because you have never done anything like this before. Once you have it behind you, it probably wasn't as bad as feared, and next time it will even be easier. At least, that's how it is for me.

No, not yet. But I also doubt that the house is purchasable as an apartment, because the children live in the landlord’s second apartment. Even if the children move out, the house would be way too big for one family, if it’s even affordable at all (still a good location in the FFM area), playing landlord is not really my thing.

The main reason is our child regarding the security of a stable environment. And we would like to furnish the apartment according to our needs. It is quite nice here and largely neutral, but among other things the bathroom unfortunately is stuck in a wild 90s design. Windows and so on would have to be redone sometime, and generally I have little desire to put money into this place if not necessary. Beyond that, I would like to know, besides my family, what I am working for. The money accumulates (good for retirement provision), but it’s nothing you can "touch."

I don’t see the life decision as so critical. I know that I can sell a dump if there’s no real estate crash intervening, but yes. I even want to, since I would like to spend my retirement abroad with my wife – it’s the typical cold water, only it’s very cold here and you can really fall on your face. Is there maybe something like "Anonymous Property Builders" in the FFM area?

Yes, then you only have the option to keep renting. Which is not a bad thing either
