One more idea, if that is even feasible.

How about placing the fireplace centrally in the entrance between the living room and stair area?
I could imagine a see-through fireplace with passageways on the left and right of the fireplace.
Since the measurements are unfortunately missing and the upper floor is not visible, my idea might also be complete nonsense, as the chimney would have to be repositioned for that.

I would not move the fireplace here right now because it forms the privacy screen for the basement entrance, which also comes up there.

That is an argument. Then maybe make the see-through chimney completely as a room divider and only have an open passage on the left.

The fireplace was a bit different than originally planned, with a see-through design as a room divider between the living room and dining room. However, I could turn it into the hallway as a room divider to the staircase. Good idea, I need to work on a design for that. Thanks

Hard to say. Since the staircase has 2 x 1/4 landings, you can see relatively few steps, but relatively much of the entire staircase length. I can imagine that the wall then feels very oppressive in the stairwell. With a normal landing staircase, I could imagine that more easily.

Oh, I forgot to mention the cellar ;) I would brick up the lower stair area and put a door to the cellar. Then I would design the handrail as a wall, so build a slant. Since you have a large window from wall to wall behind it, it will be solid but airy. The walls should be kept white here.
