Assuming the house costs 1,600 euros (rate + additional costs) - 1,500 euros remain. For two people to live on. Aside from the risk: Is it really THAT unrealistic, as it is being presented here?

Yes, the dream of every child. Others go on vacation, but you are once again at home. Italy is known from TV. TV others watch great series, you yourself only have 4 channels. Satellite and cable too expensive. Others get CapriSun, you have homemade currant juice. Others wear trendy clothes, you wear your cousin’s hand-me-downs. etc. Parents never had time. Work, house, vegetable garden. You grew up. I found it so terrible that I never want to impose that on my child. By that I don’t mean that my child should be overloaded with consumer goods, the healthy middle ground. What do you do if you or your partner get sick? Really sick or unemployed? 2008 is too far away for you, you survive Corona and the next crisis will surely come. We also do a lot ourselves, simply because we learned it. But without necessity to limit yourself like that and only work for the house just to get by, never ever. After 10 years comes the blow of fate and you have nothing. Not a penny in the savings account, have to leave the house etc. If you want to build with little money and do a lot yourself, then find a small builder. One who builds 2 houses and has a good reputation. One without a salesperson, without a show house, without glossy brochures.

Private retirement provision
Children
Income lost due to illness, unemployment
Materials for all the own work that still needs to be done
Another car or expensive parts. You can argue about whether a 3,000 euro spare part still has to be put into a car that is worth 500 euros

Doable, it just must never go wrong. Do you want to eat noodles with ketchup for a month because the electricity bill is unexpectedly high? That only happens if the washing machine breaks down or the car needs new tires.

Let him be. By now, I am tired of reacting to something like this. Yes, many here build with a higher salary and more budget and even they have to provide additional funding. But to believe that if the bank and a general contractor give the green light everything is great, that is simply absurd. I believe you are currently in the top 10 (if not even top 1) of the lowest incomes of the questioners from the last 12 months. That should say something.

The original poster already said that no children are planned. So that is out.

We are currently only two and have monthly fixed costs (retirement provision, insurance, car, etc.) amounting to 700, of which 200 are simply "because we can" and definitely not necessary (Sky, Aktion Mensch lottery, DAZN, etc.). For food, fuel, toiletries, and so on, we currently spend about 700 euros as well, and we could certainly be more frugal there. So we would relatively easily manage with 1,200 euros per month without having to live poorly or overly frugally.

That is theoretically 300 euros that would simply be left over!

Personally, the project would probably be too uncertain for me as well, but: I don’t find it quite as dramatic as you do.

Have you ever talked to the municipality? Maybe the construction obligation can be somewhat softened so that you are granted 3 or maybe 5 years.
