Hello,
we have two plots available and we can’t make a choice :( .
Plot 1 is south-facing and is an extremely narrow plot, so we cannot place our dream house there. We would have to orient the house with the short side at the front, and even that doesn’t bring any real improvement. Our floor plan is very limited and we are overshadowed by compromises.

Plot 2 is much wider and our dream house would fit in well. The problem is the north orientation. The plot is only 670m2, so the house would probably completely overshadow the garden. I’m not so sun-dependent, but I still want to sit in the sun with my guests sometimes.

What do you think?

Our architect says he would take the second plot because the south orientation is often too hot anyway.

Are the plots in the same settlement? What about street noise or other noise? Same price/m2? If everything else were equal, I would probably choose the south-facing location. How wide is the building envelope? A house is only as perfect as it fits the plot. I have seen great houses with only 7m width.

Floor plans adapt to plots of land and not the other way around. Especially nowadays, when the dream plot is still not found even after years. I would therefore choose the better plot and not make this dependent on floor plan ideas.

Especially for working people, the west is actually more interesting.

I would take the better plot of land - and then plan the house so that it fits. The problem will be that you already have such exact ideas about the house that you probably wouldn’t be satisfied with something completely different...?

The plot determines the house and its floor plan.

Even with north-facing plots, the common type house often still fits if you mirror the floor plan diagonally or, for example, swap the kitchen and living room or also the utility room with the guest room. The pre-designed type houses are usually planned on some kind of grid that makes such structural changes possible. But also a second or third terrace and changes to window areas let light in and create quiet zones where you wouldn't initially expect them. However, in general, it is the wrong approach to first fall in love with a standard house before the plot has been chosen.

Personally, I find narrow houses, modeled after houseboats, much more interesting and also airier than a 10 x 10 one.

Otherwise, just put the plots and your floor plan in here. Maybe better ideas can be given that way.
