Opinions differ

A terrace roof is a huge added value for us. It hardly takes any light as it is made of glass, with an under-running awning you have great shading options and you can simply leave the annoying blinds up on the south side, especially in summer. A much nicer feeling from the inside.

We often have friends over, sitting further outside when it’s lightly raining, no problem. Keep grilling .. no problem. Just standing outside in the rain and enjoying the garden... no problem. Less dirt directly in front of the terrace doors....

A gigantic added value for our needs.

Our terrace is about 7.5m wide due to the semi-detached house and also about 3.5m deep, we have the same corner with the garage, and a wall to the neighbor. We only have half of it permanently covered, so about 3.5x3.5, and a awning over the rest. Perfect for us, no heat builds up under the roof because it's not big enough, 2 deck chairs and the grill fit well underneath. But we also don't have constant visitors and we hardly ever eat outside - we simply don't like it. Therefore, no table with chairs is needed. And if we do sit outside with guests, there is a beer bench set that easily fits into 3.5m depth. Are we a bit unusual? Yes, we are.

Yes, everyone should check for themselves what is good for them. I just want to point out that some people also quite like to sit outside sometimes, and they don’t realize that with an oversized roof it simply no longer works, so the benefits should be weighed.

What do you mean by that? Sitting under a patio roof is not sitting outside for you?

Don’t overdo the depth of the terrace. That all costs money and the plot isn’t huge either. 3.50m is already okay, 4m more than enough. You can also place the table crosswise on it and walk around, that’s how big it is.

Our terrace is 4.75m up to the edge of the pool, of which 4m are covered with a glass terrace roof, and behind that we have blinds in the living room. We have an indoor awning and three vertical awnings, and it is true that when the sun is shining, you no longer need the blinds if the awning is extended, which is quite practical. The glass roof does not take away any light at all; we have not noticed anything. However, we are glad that we planned the vertical awnings because in the afternoon (southwest location) due to the slanting sun angle, there would be no (at most 1m) shade left under the terrace roof. I would definitely not make the canopy narrower than 4m so that there is really enough space and also shade at the seating area.

Best regards
Sabine
