Maybe someone has also seen the short report on SWR about the Senec storage units that literally went up in smoke. Unfortunately, my wife saw it too. The storage unit (Varta) is in the basement and is waiting for the final installation by the electrician. She is starting to get cold feet and doesn't feel good about actually installing it. What do you think about it? I mean, of course, any battery device can also catch fire or explode, or the likelihood is greater that there could be a cable fire somewhere else. But I also cannot deny that, all in all, it is still a very large lithium battery which, if it catches fire due to a short circuit or defect, is hardly controllable.

Please help with what precautions can be taken or how you feel about it? Does anyone have an idea if in case of emergency such an event is also covered by home insurance or if it has to be reported separately?

To my knowledge, it is covered by the homeowners insurance, but it must then be reported there and increases the payment amount.

It depends on the insurance. I informed my insurance and received the information that the premium does not change for me.

Regarding the Senec battery... I haven't seen the report, but I am personally affected because we also have such a unit in our utility room. After the incidents with Senec, all batteries were replaced as a precaution at our place as well. Ours has been running again for some time now and I am not worried about it. There are also frequent incidents with gas heaters that destroy entire houses, and yet gas heaters continue to be installed. Such technology always carries a certain risk. What kind of battery do you have exactly? In hindsight, for example, I would not choose a Senec battery anymore, as they really use lithium-ion batteries. Many other manufacturers now rely on the much safer LiFePO batteries.

Is a Li-Ion battery with NMC cell chemistry.

Wiki:
The lithium iron phosphate accumulator (lithium ferrophosphate accumulator, LFP battery) is a type of lithium-ion accumulator with a cell voltage of 3.2 V to 3.3 V.

LiFePo is also a lithium-ion battery.
The actual material difference is:
LiFePo - lithium iron - lower energy density - less likely to catch fire - e.g. Sonnen
NMC - nickel manganese cobalt - higher energy density - slightly more likely to catch fire - Senec

best regards

Thank you for the technical correction.

Basically, in this case, the same batteries are installed as with Senec. The question would be to what extent you can still clarify something with the electrician now, if the thing is already in your basement anyway. Personally, I wouldn't have that many concerns about it now.
