That was the reason for us to decide against a heat pump ... and the, at least in our circle of acquaintances, horrendous electricity costs. But surely there are experts here in the forum who can refute both. Sometimes I wonder why there are so many truths about this purely technical topic. As a non-expert, it is really difficult to make the right decision, which is why we chose the tried and tested.

Everything has been said on the subject of heat pumps. Heating load calculation and data acquisition are important components to operate a heat pump efficiently. Gas is somewhat less sensitive in this regard. Gas connection, additional basic fees, and maintenance costs should definitely be included.

That is why I am of the opinion that if a heat pump, then a sufficiently large photovoltaic system as well.

However, this consideration does not take into account the water tank required for solar thermal energy. That also needs space.

Is the heat pump really so electricity-intensive that a photovoltaic system pays off very quickly? Are there also statistics or figures for single-family homes based on your experience?

The heat pump mainly needs electricity (in the winter half-year) when your photovoltaic system hardly delivers any electricity anyway (it mainly works from April to September). So forget about this idea. A photovoltaic system primarily delivers money (from non-photovoltaic owners into your pocket), but not self-sufficiency. Of course, you can massively oversize your photovoltaic system and set up a large buffer storage in the basement, but then you waste part of the electricity because a minimum level of self-consumption must be used and is not remunerated. Economically, that is rather not viable. If you want real self-sufficiency, then get a wood log or pellet stove. Or if you happen to have a livestock operation next to your single-family home, a biogas plant as well.
