Hi Katja,

yes, this column also annoys me immensely! And when I look at the pencil sketches from 1974, one can speculate that this column was already a nuisance back then, judging by how often it was drawn over with pencil.

Unfortunately, I cannot assess whether this column could be replaced by a beam resting on one of the walls you, for example, have drawn. I will take this question to my future architect. I have a first meeting scheduled before Christmas. As I have already indicated, it is not just about the attic for me but about the renovation of an entire multi-family house.

But that is really quite a different basis if the entire house is to be rebuilt/converted or renovated. Maybe you should also let us share the plans for the other floors and the ideas for them.

Hello Climbee!

The criticism is of course justified. Before starting this thread, I had considered whether to make the entire renovation (main building approx. 400 m² + ancillary building approx. 70 m²) the topic. The whole matter is quite a complex undertaking. An architect is necessary anyway, since it involves the repurposing of a multi-generation commercial building into a multi-family house (currently 4 apartments planned). For this, I need a submission plan, building permit, etc.

For the other floors, basement, and ancillary building, I have developed designs myself in recent weeks. But I couldn’t come up with a reasonable design for the attic. For this reason, my idea was to seek help on the internet. Discussing the entire renovation in this thread also seemed too complex to me. For this reason, I chose only a partial section where I currently have a problem.

You may be wondering why I didn’t speak with an architect right away? I don’t want to show up at the initial meeting empty-handed, but rather bring along first drafts in order to have a basis for discussion.

Hi, as usually a silent reader, I tried it out this time. Somehow, it’s nice to figure out how to place the pillars as elegantly as possible.
At first, the living room seemed relatively small to me, then I measured ours, 3.25m wide. Furniture pieces (e.g. sofa, dining table, ...) are real dimensions whenever possible, which we currently have in our 3-room apartment (2 adults and 1 child). So appropriate in my opinion for the number of people and apartment size.

Maybe the kitchen unit on the outer wall needs to be moved a bit more towards the kitchen island to make it more usable, but with 1.7m distance, that shouldn’t be a problem.

That’s a nice thought. But I’m afraid you completely ignored the 2m line. The kitchen under the sloping roof and also the bathroom won’t work.

What I would also like to clarify: on one side there are sand-lime bricks lying on the floor (even quite high ones), on the other side the bare concrete. Where should the floor structure be built? On the sand-lime bricks or on the concrete? In the first case, the height problem would be exacerbated. Overall, I would in any case only plan a three-room apartment and pull the walls inward on the sides to create habitable space in the first place. The knee walls can be made accessible as (rarely used, since only reachable by crawling) storage space. This should significantly reduce the qms. In any case, consider dormers; otherwise, the height will be very low. The small side room in Kaho's draft is practically unusable in my opinion, unless you are max 120cm tall or crawl in on your knees.
