When I listen to the nonsense of the CSU on the radio this morning, we are as far away from a social consensus as from here to the next galaxy.
You misunderstand me. The consensus I mean consists of a critical mass of purchasing(!) power people worldwide.
Nobody gives a damn about the opinion of a meager 82 million Germans. Even less important is anything the CSU says. It would be the same even if a model democracy ruled here (which it does not).
There is no national election decision that can influence major global trends. We can decide on the appearance of our inner cities and how we want to get along with our neighbors.
But whether we want to share our data and what is done with it is simply beyond our control—unless one goes into exile as a hermit. Social participation today necessarily means standing with at least your feet in the data pool. And because especially younger people say, "Oh well, then I might as well dive in completely," the world will quite rapidly continue to shift towards a global data sharing economy. Whether a majority in Germany agrees with that or not is completely irrelevant.
