Evening peace A sky polished clean. Stars twinkle. In the west, the last light is sensed. Cold descends on the bare new development area, still without trees and bushes, only tender green sprouts and germinates from dark earth. The cat and I listen to Finnish rock music, the Crash. Outside on the sea, the buoys blink, on the horizon container ships head for St. Petersburg or Riga. It has become almost windless. Quickly took the laundry off the line, it won’t get drier. The woman is out, Yamaha system on loud. Evening peace. Red Band wine gums. The Marlboro smokes, uuu uu uuuuh, I wanna love you whines from the speakers....Cheerio, folks, Cuba libre, long live red October....Karsten

How is the garden doing? Have you introduced a few earthworms yet?

More concrete. Friends of ours own a gardening business with a greenhouse construction operation. It was a given that they landscaped our garden. Then my wife went with him through the countryside and the greenhouse. Looking for plants that no longer looked so great, so he could sell them. Or others that had become too big for their pot and now needed to be moved out. That’s how we got tons of greenery for a flat rate of 200. Tons. I don’t know what all of it is called. But it’s all common stuff. Well, I know some. Lemon balm, lavender, heather, apple tree. Karsten

Milieu

I come from the harbor. Did some work on the ship. Harbor is harbor. Sometimes there's a dead rat lying around. A scruffy tomcat prowls among fish crates. There are local spots you’d better avoid as a stranger. With names like Seewolf or something similar.
I turn onto the street that opens up our housing development. Suddenly it hits me like a ton of bricks. What a difference in milieu! Karsten, you’ve got oil on your hands, are you even allowed to drive in here? The stainless steel mailboxes, one like the other. Nonsense, I think, you’ve got one like that too. Model Spiess and Clien. The outdoor lights, nothing crooked, all straight, polished. Pebbles arranged neatly around carefully planted boxwoods. Nothing grows wild here, it’s planned, measured, arranged. Through large windows you look at LED-lit wall units in glossy foil. Milieu. Petite bourgeois. Building society happening. What a contrast to the harbor. And Karsten, now you’re one of them too. With your stainless steel mailbox and LED lights.
A little urge for anarchy comes up. Maybe kick a wire mesh fence a bit crooked? Oh, forget it, Schwäbisch Hall, you can build on these stones.
I drive up my gravel driveway. It crunches so nicely. Like a castle avenue. But it’s just a new development. Home sweet home. Even the cats look neat here……
