Hello,

we would like to soon install a privacy screen on the terrace in front of our semi-detached houses (the left half belongs to my brother, the right to me).

As you can see, a glass privacy screen is already installed for the two rented upper units.

Below, we had planned to use larger Trespa / HPL panels in aluminum gray and mount them on each side of the balcony supports. Approximately 180cm high and in depth about 70cm less than the terrace depth (so up to about the front support).

In extension of this privacy screen, a double wire mesh fence will be installed on the boundary next week, which will stand about 120cm above ground level in front of the terrace. A suitable gate is to be installed close to the terrace here. Unfortunately, the space between the front support and the terrace edge is only about 70cm, too little for a proper gate. The fence itself is mainly to "contain" the neighbor’s dog on the ground floor, not to serve as a privacy screen. Appropriate plants will be planted partially for that purpose.

Current delivery times and prices for Trespa or HPL from other providers are now making us consider alternatives

To illustrate, two pictures of the current state and the planned privacy screen.

For us, stone (masonry / gabions) would be an option, but that would not be cheaper either?

Wood (double-sided rhombus slats) including substructure is also not cheaper and is not desired as it does not match the house aesthetically.

Does anyone have an idea what could be mounted here as an alternative? The dimensions of the privacy screen would be about 180cm high and 270 deep.

Hmm that just calls for glass like above on the balcony? If ESG is too expensive then maybe acrylic?

I would avoid gabions; for that, you would have had to lay the foundations already when building the terrace. And a 50 to 60 cm wide and thus very massive-looking gabion, which only holds due to its own weight, you definitely don't want on the small terrace.

In our last apartment, we had galvanized square perforated sheet metal, two layers slightly offset from each other with a few centimeters distance. It would be suitable to attach it on both sides of the beams (which are in the middle). Two layers are also opaque, and the wind pressure is significantly less than with a solid wall: 10 bft wind is 50 kg/m2, so that would be a pull of around 300 kg on a laminated safety glass [VSG] wall with your dimensions. That’s not insignificant.

Galvanized perforated sheet metal also has an industrial look that would suit your house very well. It would definitely be cheaper than [VSG] or gabions. And it would also fit well with the planned double rod mesh fence! Maybe the fence builders can do it at the same time; otherwise, a metalworker.

In my eyes, it practically screams for it and would surely look top and modern on your house as well! So far, I only see cold and gray materials. Perforated sheets would top it off. Wood brings a bit of warmth and coziness to the terrace.

No wood was my brother's wish. But it will be wood after all. Siberian larch as vertical floor/cover formwork. Planed boards and then light gray glazed. I looked at the material today. It is still available in small quantities. Running meters in 140mm width at 5€ each is also okay.

Unless other influences come into play, it will stay that way. Simple climbing aids etc. can also be attached there.

Many thanks to all idea contributors. Above all, bringing some warmth with wood is a good suggestion.

I'd say, leave the separation out for now... he's your brother after all...
