Is building a basement still justified today?

If I had money in abundance, I would build one too - with a courtyard and a play basement... in the second house
So things have to fit in a 6 m long row of cupboards in the rabbit/sports room, under the stairs, in the utility room, and in the kitchen - currently working very well!

A basement is also cheaper than living space. The costs for a basement are always stated here at around 50k and the area is probably larger than 100 sqm. Thus, a sqm of basement costs me less than 500 euros. Of course, this only works if I actually need that size. If I only need 20 sqm of storage space and so on, the sqm price is of course of little use to me...

We live five people in 172 sqm. The heating is in the attic, the usual clutter is in the attic and in the garage (car is outside), the rest fits in the utility room, study, 3 children's rooms... . So far, I do not miss the basement.

If I had an empty garage, I wouldn’t miss a basement either...

I am glad to have built a basement two years ago. There I have a workshop, building services, an additional playroom (which will later become a party etc. room, at the moment there is a huge paddling pool full of balls among other things) as well as lots of storage space, laundry room. I also have a garage with an annex and a garden house. However, they are so full of car stuff (like tires), garden tools such as lawnmower, wheelbarrow, tools, bicycles, children's vehicles, etc., that we can make good use of the basement. In my study, there are things for work, apart from a household cabinet for vacuum cleaner etc., there is no space to store any more.

I just need to look around in our area! 50% of the houses without a basement fill the garage. For me, it was clear from the beginning that a basement is a must and will partly be living space. That’s why I immediately looked for a plot with a slope. In addition, the plots in good locations here in the area are simply too small.
