I wanted to do it that way at first too. I do work in [Baudenkmalpflege], but we also have many [Maurer] etc. That wouldn’t be a problem, but time is the issue.

Well, if we take the average across society, we come closest to the actual conditions.

Sure, there are extreme cases where [100.000 €] of own work is contributed, and on the other hand, there are just as many who contribute no own work or at most lay the insulation or help with pulling wires. Just as there are builders who spent [2300 €/m²], there are also builders who built for [1300 €/m²].

Any work carried out by someone unskilled for that particular step is auxiliary work and can only be evaluated as such. I go to work and have others work for me; then I know the quality is right and that nothing is done haphazardly somewhere.

On top of that, professionals have the right equipment and know how to use it properly.

When I see how perfectly the painter did our walls, we would never have managed that in our lives, and the worst part is that you always look at the corners where you know it was difficult...

I don't want to badmouth own work; in most cases, it is just overrated.

Yeah yeah, the myth of quality. We saw it over the weekend. The drywall installation is usually done with double layers if regular drywall panels are used.

In one of our bathrooms, apparently a skilled craftsman used one panel too few (the house was completely built by an architect with craftsmen).

Anyway, he double-layered the upper part (where, as a layperson, you can also check behind the flush plate), and only single-layered the lower part. (of course with air between the metal stud and the drywall panel).

And so over time, the panel basically disintegrated... In other words, the toilet suddenly *hung in* the wall.

There are very good craftsmen; but finding them is not easy either.
There are plenty of companies where apprentices and not the business owners make sure they get through the day.

There is certainly more botching by [Heimwerker] than by [Handwerker].

But if I pay craftsmen with hard €€, I get even more annoyed when something is just thrown together carelessly, or is actually botched.
