How deep should the stair landing be? How to design it?

138 cm hallway width, of which about 230 cm in the middle of the 7 m hallway length has no wall because that’s where the stairwell is, and then sensibly glass doors towards living/kitchen/windfang I do not find too narrow. I assume that nothing else will be placed in the hallway there. Although it is not really 7 m length, but actually only 5.44 m .. the remaining 1.6 m are in the windfang, which is wider.

I find the windfang niche practical, and the kitchen should not be narrower, as otherwise there will be passage problems with the sliding door to the dining area.

The windbreak was an idea of the architect, which I have not had painted yet only because of the appearance/ hallway length. Realistically, this door would probably always be left open, which is why I would like to get rid of it.

Steven, is the step somehow framed at your place? like, for example, the stair railing extended all the way forward? I'm just afraid that otherwise the step could become a tripping hazard.

Shortening the kitchen for the hallway is not an option for us, because the load-bearing wall would also affect the upper floor. I would rather shorten the pantry and the WC, as I am also concerned that the latter might become too narrow.

ktb, would you still find the hallway acceptable without a windbreak door?

We both grew up with comparably narrow, even slightly longer hallways. Terrible, something we actually wanted to avoid—until we really started planning the house and things like the front door on the narrow side, etc., came into focus...

First of all: having a stair step protrude into the hallway is out of the question because it represents a tripping hazard. I am known for not liking hallways, but I do not find it cramped here. Kbt has already provided the reasoning. I also see no problem with leaving out the vestibule door. If you still want to gain 10/20cm for the hallway, I share Maria's view that the option is to move the partition wall to the kitchen by a few centimeters. It is generously sized at 437cm, I see no bottleneck with 20cm less.

Even without a wall/door to the windbreak, I think 138 cm should be enough.

And, the entire area could be redesigned like this:

This would also benefit the entire wardrobe situation. Simply more airy. The kitchen wall to the office would then also be shifted slightly to the right, about 12 to 15 cm, so that it aligns flush with the staircase wall on the right.

Office accessible from the middle means the entire left wall can be filled with cabinets.

Thank you for the draft!

So far, I haven't dared to tackle such a redesign because the architect's requirement was to concentrate the dirty area at the front door and also not to access the guest toilet through the dirty area. But it's true, it immediately looks more spacious.

In the evening, my boyfriend and I will go through it to see if we can find a furnishing that keeps the dirt away from the toilet while still providing space for a chair and my shoe collection.

(am I being too strict about the dirty area? I've just read about it so often here and also found it silly myself...)
