I don't think camouflage paint does any good here.

We probably want a classic stainless steel number. Whether with a lamp above it or backlit, we will still consider. We find the WO much more difficult...

A number in the front yard/on the fence/on a stone or similar could also be an alternative for you if you haven't prepared any cables in the wall and are unsure what is easily readable with such a busy clinker.

Where is it regulated how my house number must look? So far, there was none on the house at all, only on the garden gate. But that’s not really practical since the gate faces the opposite direction of traffic. Our house is too far from the street and is also supposed to be overgrown, so we can’t put anything discreet on it. I could imagine putting it on our garage...

Actually, every city/town usually has a regulation regarding house numbers. For example, it might say that if the house is x meters away from the street, then the house number should be placed on the fence or something like that. But I think it’s simply in everyone’s interest that the number is clearly visible, and no one will complain if it’s hanging on the left instead of the right or something like that!

Yes, see (perfect username): if you are assigned a number, it will be in the letter from the municipality. Since you renovated and basically bought a house number along with it, the letter is unnecessary. Nevertheless, it is in YOUR interest that you can be found by the emergency services or fire department. Also, your personal mail should not end up at the neighbor's.

There are general regulations in the Building Code and further rules by the federal states or cities/municipalities. The goal is the orientation and findability of the respective property or house. Therefore, as said, it is especially in one’s own interest to be found as quickly as possible in an emergency, because that might be required faster than one would like. The design is partially regulated or restricted but generally no one really cares. Therefore, I would place the house number so that it can be recognized as easily as possible from the street and thus fulfill its important purpose, namely the findability of the property. Whether that is the garage wall, the gate to the property, or the house wall should be of secondary importance. If necessary, a house number can also be placed in several locations.
